Mazel Tov!

After more than 30 years together, two children, homes in Los Angeles and NYC and countless life events, my uncles were legally married yesterday in LA.

Although they were married last year in a symbolic ceremony, this time it was LEGAL! Mazel tov!!

I can't even express how happy I am that this was finally able to happen. They have always been my favorite model for marriage and the fact that they were FINALLY able to make it legal gives me goosebumps.

There have never been two better suited people. They make eachother laugh, they are best friends. I used to visit them in NYC several times a year growing up and it was my favorite thing to do. They were just so happy, which is more than I can say for 90 percent of the straight marriages I know.

The (moronic, evil, CLOSETED) other side says it would ruin marriage? Well, I think we straights have already done that ourselves. After all, haven't we invented "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire"; "The Bachelor" and a divorce rate creeping towards 60 percent?

When my uncle tells me that R and I remind him of them, I think of it as the highest compliment. There is no other marriage, straight or gay, that I respect more. And we are a bit like them in the way we love eachother. To that, I say thank G-d.

The fact that they had to wait 30+ years to make it legal is sickening, but their family and the life they have built stands in stark contrast to the idiotic rhetoric espoused by the right. California and Massachusetts have done it, let's get the rest of this country to wake up and get smart.

In 30 years, this inequality will only be an embarrassment. My children will one day ask me if I can actually remember a time before all people could be married. And I will tell them the same thing my father told me when I asked him if he remembered segregation: "Once when stupid people roamed free, there were laws that allowed such hatred. But now they are all locked up and on display in the 'relics of the past' exhibit now showing at the United States of Massachusetts Museum. Occassionally we stop in and throw some bologna their way. They seem to like that."

Dare to dream.

Fantastic! Congrats to them. And you're so right: heteros have done way more to destroy the "institution" of marriage than allowing gays to marry ever will.
