Fake Cheer

I swear there are a lot of things I like about the holiday season. But most things are tempered with a side of things that really annoy me.

For instance, I love gift-giving and receiving, but I hate wrapping and shopping at overcrowded malls and shops. I love eating cookies, but I hate baking them or cleaning up the mess after. I love spending time with family, but I also love not spending TOO much time with family. It is a stressful time of year. And anyone who says differently is clearly not aware that more suicides happen during this time of year than any other, the world over.

I do like Christmas cards, though. Yes, it is a pain in the arse to order them, get them all addressed and sent out in a timely fashion, but I love, love love the few Christmas letters I receive. They like totally make my year, ya know. And I love getting photos of friends babies and snapshots of their vacations and things they did over the past year. I like Christmas cards because they are not fake. Okay, so I send out about 50. But the only people I send them to are people I truly like, love or want to like or love. And for the most part, the same goes for the cards I receive. They are from people I like, love or want to.

So, it royally ticks me off when I get cards from people who would clearly be on Santa's bad list of friends. Did you not congratulate my husband on the birth of his first daughter? Do things that definitely take you off the friend list? Then please take US off your Christmas card list. There is nothing I loathe more than fakeness, except maybe Dick Cheney. And quite frankly, I have to say I probably like Cheney better. At least he has the balls to be his evil, cloven-hooved self.

I know I have said before that do not like platitudes or euphemism and the same goes for tidings of falsehoods. Don't wish me a good year in a Xmas card and then treat me like crap all year long, thank you. I can honestly say that each and every person in my rolodex and on my Xmas card list is a friend, someone I care about and hope to see next year. Sure, there are probably people I left off the list who I care about, but for a select few, not getting a Xmas card from me is a clear sign that we are not friends.

And who says I lack holiday spirit???

Maybe some people view sending cards as a way to *try* and make amends for past wrongs. There are those on my list who, for all intents and purposes, should not be sending ME a card and should, instead, be on the naughty list for something they've done to upset me. However, I send them cards, and they send them in return. I haven't had a real conversation with my dad for over a decade, and yet he sends me a card each year. The only thing he says is, "Love Dad." At least it's something. Instead of being angry about it, I appreciate it for what it's worth. I certainly understand what you are saying, though. Sometimes people send cards out of habit (guilty). How do you just stop, though? I've been sending cards to the same people for many years, even though we don't communicate otherwise. If I reserved cards for my closest friends and relatives, I might have 5! All I know is, each card and letter I send is genuine. Never fake.
