It Keeps Mom Running

During my last pregnancy, I stopped running around 10 weeks. I stopped because I was getting short of breath and because I was paranoid. Even though everyone said it was ok, I was not going to do anything to even potentially damage the pregnancy. So I walked and did the elliptical each day. This time around, I am far less cautious.

I am still running. Not nearly as much as I would like to be (30 miles a week), but definitely still getting three good runs in a week. I am running about 8-10 miles a week. I temper my running workouts with spinning, which is equally taxing and stairclimbing on the stepmill. I have also continued lifting.

Since it is the winter, many of my runs are inside my gym on the treadmill, but I am still running my 3-mile loop outside when it is warm enough. But oh man, is it getting hard. Up until November, my three-mile loop was my "easy run." No longer. Yesterday, I thought my bladder would explode halfway through my run and I had to duck into a bar for a pee break. Sexy.

As of now, the plan is to keep the running going throughout the pregnancy. I am convinced it will make the transition back into running after the pregnancy much easier.

But ever since my belly started the pop, the looks I have been getting are pretty amusing. Still, I will not abandon my routine. It is getting harder and more challenging, but I am in it for the long haul. We'll see how long I make it.

I really admire your dedication. I, to, have heard running is just fine throughout pregnancy if it's something you've been doing before getting pregnant. But with my situation, I had to stop running while going through my first IVF cycle on my doctor's orders, and I'm stopping this time around the day before my transfer (and will not run if it's successful).

I think it is awesome that you are continuing to run...any amount! I am sure it will allow you to quickly get back to where you want to be once you are no longer preggo.
