There are a lot of things I don't like about my home state. But yesterday's gay marriage ruling is not one of them. And, while hatred is always declasse, here it is a downright embarrassment. If you are a homophobe in Mass., you better be prepared to have few friends. This is the way life was meant to be, thank you.
It makes the high cost of living, bad subway service and rude drivers worth it. We live in the only state in the country that allows gay marriage, equally--not civil unions, not rights for partners, but actual marriage. We live in one of the few states where both the city mayor and the state govenor would march in the Pride parade.
According to the Globe:
"But when the hour arrived, there was neither debate nor delay. In a packed chamber, first senators and then House members cast their votes to reject a constitutional amendment that would have defined marriage in Massachusetts as only a union between a man and a woman."
The proposed ban received only 45 votes. Take that, homophobia. Take that, Christian Right. Take that, redneck gay bashers. Get out of our state.
As our Governor said: "Today's vote is not just a vote for marriage equality. It was a vote for equality itself."
There is so much to be upset about in this country today--the war, the state of public education, a war criminal president. But yesterday gave us a silver lining. There is still one tiny state in this vast country that values equality. And even though it will be a David and Goliath-like battle, I believe that our values will persevere. Amen.
